What kind of obstacles will there be?

Obstacles will be kept a mystery until event weekend. However, participants should expect plenty of running, jumping, climbing, swimming and crawling (and of course, multiple electric shocks are not out of the question).

Is this a competition?

This event is a competition, with the individual winners being crowned World’s Toughest Mudder and receiving a cash prize of US $15,000 and the team winner taking home US $15,000. Participants will be required to wear timing chips and will be subject to the event’s official rules. That said, participants are strongly encouraged to help each other make it through the course as with any Tough Mudder event.

Why this event format?

Laps vs. out and back – We thought about doing an A to B style course with over 100 miles in the Rockies but then realized this would make us just like every other boring ‘adventure’ race. The obstacles you’ll see at World’s Toughest Mudder will be significantly harder than a regular Tough Mudder and because they’re going to be so bad-ass we wanted to make sure our participants got more than one chance to get their asses kicked by them. Finally, an obstacle that was easy during lap one might be impossible for someone by lap three. It should be great to watch.

Spectator-friendly vs. out there alone – Speaking of watching, the Event Format allows spectators such as friends and family as well as the media to experience the event alongside the participants. Those participating will feel like they are in a stadium with cheering fans, rather than trekking in the wilderness. It also allows us to know where the top racers are in relation to one another and watch an exciting finish go down.

Safety reasons – Due to the extreme toughness of this event, we need to be able to monitor all event participants at all times. This is not a trail run where you may sprain your ankle and have to limp home. This is jumping into freezing cold water, running through flames, and getting electric shocks time and time again. Let’s be clear: 90% of you won’t be finishing. We owe it to your families not to hold this thing in the middle of the Rockies where rescue would be impossible. You might not care about seeing your 40th birthday, but someone else does.

CAUTION, AGAIN – Of those that begin the event, only 10% are expected to finish. Only those in extreme PHYSICAL and MENTAL condition should even think about attempting to enter.

What if there is bad weather?

This is a rain or shine event. Because the event takes place in New Jersey in mid-November, participants should expect extremely harsh conditions.

I have a preexisting medical condition, can I still compete?

All participants are strongly encouraged to have their doctor’s sign-off before competing.

What should I wear?

Competitors are free to select the clothing to wear during the event. A recommended list of clothing and gear can be found here. Additional items must conform to the event’s official rules. If you have a question about the legality of a specific piece of clothing, please email us at contact@toughmudder.com.

Can I wear a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are allowed and strongly encouraged.

Will there be medics on site?

Yes, there will be dozens of qualified medical personnel throughout the course. In addition, there will be heated recovery tents located at the finish and at designated spots throughout the course.

Will there drinking water on the course?

Yes, there will be water stations accessible at each mile of the course. Additionally, there will be select energy bars and gels in designated spots, TBD. Participants are encouraged to bring additional food or energy bars they may need, which they can keep in their designated pit area spot.

Can I take a break during the event?

Yes, participants are strongly encouraged to rest as needed throughout the event, either in the pit area, or at warming stations throughout the course. It is up to each participant to determine when they should take a break depending on their body’s needs and their race strategy. Note: participants will only be allowed to enter the pit area after finishing a complete lap. If participants enter the pit area any other time, they will be disqualified, per the event’s official rules.

Can women compete?

Yes, any woman who has qualified for the event may compete. There will be a male and a female winner, each of whom will receive a $15,000 cash prize.

Do all of my teammates need to qualify?

Only one teammate needs to qualify to enter WTM. However, the qualifying team member must register the entire team at the same time.

What if I only have 3 members on my team?

Teams are welcome to compete even if they have fewer than 4 team members, but no team may have more than 4 members.

What if one team member gets hurt or tired?

Teams are only as good as their weakest team member—team laps only count if the entire team completes them as a unit. Any laps completed with less than a complete team will not be counted. If a team member withdraws from the competition or skips a lap, the team is no longer eligible to win the competition, but may continue if they wish.

Can I quit the event before 24 hours is over?
