THE GORUCK CHALLENGE

Think you can handle a tougher Tough Mudder? Try doing it with a backpack filled with bricks.

Train with US Special Forces for to see if you have what it takes to join the Tough Mudder GORUCK Club. These Green Berets don’t want anyone slowing them down, but they’ll take an elite few with them to the next two Tough Mudders.

GORUCK bags are designed by US Special Forces and were proven to be the toughest on the planet at Tough Mudder NY&PA. Sadly, a bag this good doesn’t come cheap. The GR1 starts at around $300, but the guys are willing to give mudders a discount. You can have a GR1 for $250, but there is a catch—to get a bag this good at this price, you need to earn it.

If you can make it through training—while wearing GORUCK bags filled with bricks, of course—you’ll be able to run the event with the team and attend the GORUCK bonfire the night before. Even we aren’t sure what happens at those parties, but they’re pretty legendary. Plus, camping out the night before means saving money on a hotel. We hear the ground is good for your back.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The GORUCK Challenge is all about weeding the meek from the mudders.

The Night Before–Ruckoff. Meet up to get to know your GORUCK coaches and your fellow participants. Who knows how late it will go, even with an early wakeup?

The Big Day–Spend the morning with your fellow candidates running around muddy and with wet feet. You’ll go through different drills designed to help prepare you for Tough Mudder, as well as to show the GORUCK guys if you have what it takes to be on their team. Once you’re home for the day, the guys will email you to let you know if they want you back.

CELL LEADERS

Green Berets are notoriously hard to pin down, but Jason’s Special Forces buddies will be back from the far corners of the earth to lead mudders that pass the training event.

Jason McCarthy

An adventure seeker at heart, Jason earned his Green Beret after 9/11 in order to make a difference…but also to get a paid trip or two to the far away corners of the world with America’s best. Inspired by the three rules of Special Forces: (1) Always look cool (2) Never get lost (3) If you get lost, look cool – and thinking most gear on the market was cheap and broke rule number 1 – he founded GORUCK, which also lets him explore a passion for camaraderie through things like running the toughest one day event on the planet with a rucksack stuffed with bricks and a team of guys who find that kind of thing fun, too.

Jason is based out of Washington, DC, where he is getting his MBA at Georgetown University (38°54′32.83″N 77° 4′31.67″W), not far from Rock Creek Park’s trails, home to his favorite runs with his world traveling chocolate lab, Java.
