Interviewing at TMHQ

At Tough Mudder, we only hire the best and brightest. Our People team’s top priority is finding smart, motivated, fun candidates who will be a great fit for our growing organization and vibrant culture. With that in mind, we have a multi-phased interview process to determine the compatibility of a candidate’s personality and skill set.

  • Phase 1: Submit Cover Letter + Resume. Write a good cover letter, tidy up your resume, and send ‘em our way!
  • Phase 2: Video interview. You’ll receive a set of pre-recorded questions and record your responses via webcam
  • Phase 3: Skype with People. A 30 minute chat with someone from our People department
  • Phase 4: One-hour with TMHQ. We pick a few relevant team members for you to meet with
  • Phase 5: One-hour with department executive or line manager. This is where we separate the great from the good
  • Phase 6: Meeting with member of Executive Committee or CEO. Our final check to ensure you’re qualified, capable and ready to thrive at TMHQ

We know, it’s thorough, but we don’t just do it for kicks. Our process is structured to allow a candidate’s personality to shine through in the first few rounds, making it easier for our team to determine who would be a good fit at Tough Mudder. Are you up to the challenge? Are you ready to change your life and kick-start your career? Apply here and tell us why!

Why work for Tough Mudder?

Tough Mudder events place an emphasis on teamwork and pushing yourself, and working at TMHQ is no different. All new hires take part in an eight week Induction process designed to get new employees up to speed. The Induction process includes engaging presentations about the company, our culture, and different departments, as well as team-building activities with fellow Inductees. Because feedback is really essential to what we do, Inductees meet with their line managers weekly to talk about what’s going well, things to improve upon, and goals and expectations for the coming week(s). Inductees will also make the journey to a Tough Mudder event, where they’ll work the event one day and run the course the next.

TMHQ Staff Perks

Tough Mudder University

One of the best things about working at Tough Mudder is the company’s dedication to professional development. Everyone at TMHQ is automatically enrolled in Tough Mudder University which aims to replicate the Harvard Business School education of our founder and CEO Will Dean. Not only does Will share all he has learned but also quite literally brings HBS to Tough Mudder, as the team reads monthly HBS case studies and participates in mock HBS classes.

Tough Mudder Ventures

We’re doing amazing things at Tough Mudder, both as entrepreneurs and for entrepreneurs. One of our newer initiatives, Tough Mudder Ventures, is a start-up funding program that will provide competitive seed funding, office space, mentoring, and more to select former Tough Mudder employees who launch their own ventures.

TMHQ Annual Business Plan Contest

Tough Mudder’s annual business plan contest provides a unique opportunity for TMHQ employees to develop their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills within the work place. Teams are welcome to invite an outside member in to proceedings, fostering creativity and insight from different sources and backgrounds.

This contest allows all employees to develop new business concepts, with the very real and exciting prospect of seeing them come to life. Tough Mudder Ventures is always looking out for the next great business plan (with the prospect of backing for the winning idea!), along with the ever growing project lists for Tough Mudder’s New Event Development unit and Commercial team.

After the initial elimination round is a live final presentation, judged by a panel of outside experts. In addition to detailed feedback, and entry and guidance in to international business plan contests, the winning team also receives a substantial cash prize!

So, for TMHQ employees who have the biggest idea since, err, Toughmudder, this is their opportunity to submit it!

The 2013 business plan contest final was in March 2013, with six teams being judged in the last round. On the judging panel were:

  • Philip James, founder and CEO of Lot 18
  • Jenn Hyman, co-founder and CEO of Rent the Runway
  • Ann Berry, Goldman Sachs private equity
  • Ian van Every, co-founder of Dr. Thom

The members of the winning team were Charlotte Bender and Greg Fitzgerald from the TMHQ Marketing Department, and Dan Paster, a non-TMHQ team member. Their winning idea, The Workshop, was universally admired by the judges for being a strong concept in a market where the team was well placed to win. The team were awarded a cash prize for their efforts and will go down in history as the winners of the inaugural Tough Mudder Business Plan Contest. Workshop_horiz

History, Philosophy, and TMHQ Mission

The History of Tough Mudder

Tough Mudder was founded by Englishmen Will Dean and Guy Livingstone. Dean came up with the idea while at Harvard Business School, and it was a finalist in Harvard Business School’s annual Business Plan Contest. He brought on Guy Livingstone to act as Chief Operating Officer. On an $8,000 marketing budget, they used Facebook to launch the first Tough Mudder event on May 2, 2010, at Bear Creek Resort in Allentown, PA. Since then, the number of Tough Mudder events has increased exponentially with 14 events in 2011 and 35 scheduled in 2012, including events in the U.K., Australia and Canada.

The Tough Mudder Philosophy

The Tough Mudder series was created to test toughness, fitness, strength, stamina and mental grit all in one place and all in one day. Sure, there are a few events that will test these things – for thousands of dollars and a week of your life. But in one day and in one location? We don’t think so. Other mud runs? Forget it – unless you want to run alongside your 60-year-old grandmother. Tough Mudder is a truly exceptional event for truly exceptional people. Fair-weather runners should stay at home.

The TMHQ Mission

TMHQ’s long-term mission is to create unconventional, life-changing experiences.
