We All Fear Something
We all fear something. Don’t believe someone when they say they have no fears – they just don’t want to admit they’re afraid of something. Whether that fear lives on the Tough Mudder obstacle course or not, we’re going to talk about training your mindset to conquer your fears.
Identify The Fear
First things first… what is it you’re afraid of?
A lot of us are afraid of spiders – they run fast, look scary, and some are even deadly. It’s funny that us 100+ lb humans are afraid of something that doesn’t even weigh an ounce. Some people joke that they’d burn their house down if they had a scary enough spider skittering around their house.
Some people are afraid of moving to a new city or starting a new job. What if they don’t like it? What if it’s not everything they thought it would be? Both are scary, but both are fantastic growth opportunities.
According to Cleveland Clinic, 3-6% of the human population has a fear of heights, also known as Acrophobia. Acrophobia is one of the most common phobias! Do you fall into the 3-6%?
Overcoming Fear Starts With Your Mind
If you tell yourself you can’t, you can’t. If you tell yourself you can, you can. It’s as simple as it sounds, let’s not overcomplicate it. You can do anything you tell yourself you can do, but this also works the other way.
Think back to when you were a kid and you got on your first roller coaster ride: it was so scary the first time and someone likely had to drag you on, but when you got off the ride, you wanted to do it again! The fight or flight of facing your fear will give you this euphoric feeling after it’s done.
Actually Doing The Thing
You can read blog posts and online forums about facing your fears as much as you want, but what you’re doing is actually procrastinating. Our biggest tip for overcoming fear is to face it head first. In fact, exposure to fears is recommended in order to overcome them.
Want to apply to your dream job but aren’t sure if you’re ready or capable? Upload your resume and click submit. Don’t think, just do. If you don’t hear back from the company, at least you tried. If you do hear back from them, you’re one step closer to your dream job… How cool would that be?!
Have you always thought about moving somewhere fresh and new-to-you? Sign the lease and move. If you don’t like it, you can always go back. You’re not trapped where you are. The only thing trapped is your mind.
Acrophobe? Book a flight with a window seat… to Tough Mudder… where you climb up one side of Mudderhorn and down the other…
All it takes are good thoughts, telling yourself you can do it, and taking the first step. The first step is the hardest because it requires a decision, but it gets easier from there. There’s three months left in 2022, what do you still have left to check off your list?
