4 Reasons to Fuel Your Training With a Pre-Workout

Even the most motivated Mudders have days that call for an extra kick in the butt whether that be from a friend, trainer, or a tasty pre-workout drink. Yep: the right pre-workout drink can mean the difference between “out of it” and “ready to rock.” And while water before exercise is always a smart choice, we’re fans of CELSIUS, a pre-workout that can take your energy level from 0 to 100 real quick. Read on to find out the benefits of pre-workouts and what ingredients to look for.

 

1. YOU’LL BE MORE FOCUSED

The primary ingredient in most pre-workouts is caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that will help you with alertness, reaction time, and improve your mood at doses between 100-300 mg, according to a 2016 Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews report.  

But too much caffeine—more than 400mg—can be harmful and increase anxiety and impair mental performance. As for physical performance, the review states that the exercise-enhancing effects of caffeine come from a reduced perception of effort and an increased pain threshold. The reason for this isn’t necessarily the caffeine; it’s other ingredients that improve circulation and respiratory function such as arginine, a natural beet root powder, and I-citrulline, an amino acid that helps make other amino acids more bioavailable, according to this European Journal of Applied Physiology study.  

What does that even mean? It’s key for endurance performance because amino acids are the last line of defense in terms of what your body uses for energy on a Tough Mudder course. First you burn carbs, then fat, then protein (which is made of amino acids). Citrulline may also increase speed as shown by faster running times in a Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise study. CELSIUS HEAT has 2,000 mg of I-citrulline, which may seem like a low amount but is enough to reap its benefits.

 

4. YOU’LL TAKE IN VITAMINS
