5 Things People NEVER Tell You About Volunteering Overnight

By TMHQ | May 22, 2019

The all-nighter: It's a right of passage here at Tough Mudder. Our night owl volunteers for Toughest Mudder and World's Toughest Mudder are the bread and butter to our entire operation. They're the biggest support system for our athletes when they think they have nothing more to give. Our competitive race series wouldn't be possible without our overnight volunteers—so don’t let the weather, hard-core athletes, or the late-night hours intimidate you.

If you still aren’t sold, here are 5 cool benefits of volunteering overnight that people NEVER tell you about:

1. You Receive a Survival Kit

Hand sanitizer, lip balm, tissues, snacks, snacks, and more snacks. What more could you need? You may think you’re tough and don’t need half of the things given in the kit, but believe us when we say, you will. The pack of tissues will be your best friend and your midnight snack will keep you going!

2. Mudder SWAG

Seems like nowadays getting a T-shirt is expected. But when you volunteer overnight you're part of the exclusive group that is granted the MVP beanie. Yes, you heard that right. A beanie! With that beanie comes respect and gratitude from all of TMHQ as well as our Mudder Athletes for helping us put on one special event.

3. Coffee & Hot Chocolate, Hand Delivered

When you know you're going to be up for a full 12 hours, there's no real reason not to drink a hot cup of joe—especially when it’s hand delivered! Around midnight, 3 AM and again at 6 AM, we scurry on over to give you that boost you're probably going to need.

4. You'll See a Side of Tough Mudder You’ve Never Seen Before

During our overnight shifts, it’s a whole different race. The mental challenges set in. The temperature drops. The athletes' paces slow down. You find yourself in an incredible time warp that you oddly don’t ever want to snap out of. The amount of blood, sweat, and tears will give you this absolute sense of appreciation that you won’t find in any other event.

5. Bragging Rights

We don’t like to brag but...this overnight shift might just give you some points on the badass scale.
