Race Recap: Toughest Mudder East

Author: Tough Mudder June 27, 2018
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

The latest stop of America’s Toughest Mudder race series landed at 508 International just outside of Charlton, MA, at the Tough Mudder Boston event. The brand-new course proved a beast for all 660 participants who started the race, but resulted in an extremely competitive event, with several lead changes on the final laps between Toughest Mudder rookies and veterans alike. Plus, the top spots on the podium were up for grabs, since Tougher Mudder Whistler winners Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster opted to sit out the 8-hour race this time around.

Toughest Mudder Boston Podium

In the women’s division, Tough Mudder Pro Team member Allison Tai came out of the starting gate very strong, gaining the lead over Sprint Lap winner Alex Roudayna 2 hours into the race.  Multiple attacks by Anne Champagne were unable to overcome Tai’s incredible pace—she finished with 40 miles and 11th place overall. On the wen’s side, Miles Bartlett’s Sprint Lap win in 37 minutes looked to pose a strong challenge to Toughest Mudder veterans Shaun Stephens-Whale and Mark Jones. The dropping temps and light drizzle were no match for them, as Stephens-Whale jumped out to a 2-minute lead over Jones by Mile 15. As Stephens-Whale methodically increased his lead over the next 30 miles, the race for 2nd was extremely close with multiple lead changes by rookies Tyler Mccreddie, Mark Jones, and Ja Shua Ried. Check out the course map, venue overview and the play-by-play recaps below for a closer look at the fight for the rest of the podium spots.

Course Review

Toughest Mudder East Course Map

The Toughest Mudder East course featured 18 obstacles throughout a 5-mile circuit course. The overnight race format started at the stroke of midnight, pushing participants to complete as many laps of the course as possible in 8 hours and 30 minutes. Freshly cut trails through the dense and dark woods dominated the landscape, giving the trail runners an early advantage on the Sprint Lap—a full hour of limited obstacle openings, providing athletes a taste of what’s to come for the next 7 hours. The early sections of course were characterized by Tough Mudder classics of Kiss of Mud 2.0, Arctic Enema, and Berlin Walls. By 2am, signature obstacles like Rope-a-Dope, Kong, and Spunky Monkey were opened, quickly taxing participants of all upper-body strength. Rounding out the end of the 5-mile circuit was The Stacks—a unique Vault feature reminiscent of Tri-State’s Massive Turd. An overnight upgrade to Happy Ending included water jets spraying down as participants climbed up the front face before sliding down into the finish line.

Men’s Recap:

Toughest Mudder Boston Men's top 3 finishers

After passing Sprint Lap winner Miles Bartlett on the 2nd lap, Shaun Stephens-Whale (2nd place @ America’s Toughest South) continued to widen his lead on the rest of the male chase team comprised of Mark Jones, Tyler Mccreddie, and Ja Shua Ried. With a full 5-mile lap lead, 6 hours into the race it was a race against himself and the clock to achieve the coveted 50-mile patch before 8:30am. The fight for 2nd place was far from over. Mccreddie’s 2nd place lead over Jones was reduced to just 3 minutes by Mile 25, followed closely behind by Ried. As the sun rose and time wound down, both Jones and Ried crossed the start line one minute before it closed for good at 7:45am. Mccreddie’s fatigued legs prevented him from pursuing a final lap, completing his 40 miles at 7:41 am, and securing 4th place. After nearly 8 hours of racing, it all came down to the final 5 miles. Jones’ 7-minute lead at the start of Mile 40 proved to not be enough as Ried passed Jones in the final mile approaching The Stacks. Crossing at 8:28am, Ried secured 2nd place and a $2,000 prize. Jones’ 8:35am finish of Lap 9 fell beyond the time cutoff, leaving him with 40 official miles.

Women’s Recap:

Toughest Mudder Boston Women's top 3 finishers

In the women’s field, Alex Roudayna’s Sprint Lap win just ahead of Allison Tai presented a great matchup between two ultra-distance Tough Mudder veterans. The constant drizzle and dropping overnight temperatures overtook Roudayna yet again, allowing Tai to extend her lead on Tougher Mudder 2017 Champion Anne Champagne by Mile 15. A familiar name on the Tough Mudder circuit, Deanna Brasz sat in 3rd place just minutes ahead of Kelly Sullivan and Kera Pezzuti by mile 25. By Mile 30, a very tired and cold Brasz pushed on for a 7th lap ahead of the 8:30am cutoff time, in a final attempt to secure 5th place. In a desperate attempt to catch Tai on Lap 8, Champagne pitted for just 60 seconds, sprinting back out on course, just 10 minutes behind Tai. However, it wasn’t enough to push Tai off the 1st place podium. Tai completed her 40 miles in just over 8 hours. Champagne’s 8:17 finish for 40 miles secured her $2,000 prize and 2nd place. In similar fashion to the men’s heat, the 3rd place spot was up for grabs between Sullivan and Pezzuti on the last lap. Sullivan had a 2-minute lead over Pezzuti leaving the quick pit on Lap 7, as Pezzuti arrived into the pit for a final pep talk and refuel by her pit crew. In a dramatic finish, Sullivan staved off Pezzuti’s last attempt, crossing the finish line for a 7th time at 8:04am for 3rd place.  Pezzuti’s 8:14am finish was good for 4th place and 35 miles.

Top 5 — Women:

1. Allison Tai

2. Anne Champagne

3. Kelly Sullivan

4. Kera Pezzuti

5. Deanna Brasz

Race Recap: Tougher Mudder Whistler

Author: racedirector June 21, 2018
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

The second big race in the Tougher Mudder Championship Series (5 events throughout the year – Philly, Whistler, London, Chicago, Seattle) kicked off on Saturday, June 16th at Whistler Olympic Park.  The weather matched the spectacular scenery that this venue delivers, crisp and cool as competitors launched from the start line with steep elevation gains that warmed up your screaming quads quickly.

Men’s Race

To ensure a cleaner, and more competitive, race in 2018 the men’s only heat took off at 7:45am. “From the second they were released, these guys shot up the first climb like rockets,” said Johnny Little, TMHQ Race Director. “The terrain of the course was mixed with gravel trails to mud bogs to dirt tracks, so mindful footing was key.” It was no surprise that pro-team member and Canada’s own, Ryan Atkins was part of the 3-man breakaway after a few kilometers into the course. “These three—Ryan Atkins, Kristopher Swanson and Shaun Stephens-Whale—appeared to be attached at the hip throughout the majority of the course. Never more than a minute apart,” Little recalled. The three cleared through obstacles, brush, tremendous inclines and descents and finally detached from one another at the final climb. Throughout the event intense climbing obstacles, Cliffhanger and Devil’s Beard, challenged everyone who attempted it. Coming into Happy Ending, Ryan Atkins was just 25 seconds ahead of Kristopher Swanson. Rounding out the podium was Shaun Stephens-Whale. Less than a minute separated our Top 3 Males.

Ryan Atkins – 1:13:12

Kristopher Swanson – 1:13:37

Shaun Stephens-Whale – 1:14:09

Women’s Race

Staring 15 minutes after the male heat took off, the female competitors followed suit, shooting up the first climb all together. A few familiar faces reached the apex first: Pro team members Lindsay Webster (Atkins) and Allison Tai. “They quickly broke away early from the main pack,” said Little. Both knowing that the higher prize purse (Championship Series) and country pride was on the line.  Prizing for our Championship Series is as follows: $2500 for First Place, $1000 for Second Place and $500 for Third Place Male and Female winners. At the midway point of the race, the Canadian female duo expanded their lead and our 3rd female, Michelle Ford, was creating space between herself and the rest of the ladies out on course.Eventually, Lindsay pulled further away from Allison and took home the win, setting the scene for a family photo-op atop the podium with her husband, Ryan Atkins.

Lindsay Webster – 1:32:06

Allison Tai – 1:37:11

Michelle Ford – 1:49:42

Next Tougher Mudder Championship Series race: Tougher Mudder London North, 7/7.

Tough Mudder’s Weekend Warrior Guide: Whistler

Author: Jadebelzberg June 14, 2018
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Eat. Adventure. Stay.

50 years ago, Whistler was a little known ski-town, just a 90-minute drive from metropolitan Vancouver, British Columbia; now, Whistler is a vibrant, all-season mountain resort known for its beautiful vistas, sparkling lakes, dense rainforest, and lively, pedestrian-only village.

Race your heart out at Canada’s Toughest Mudder or Whistler Tough Mudder Full and Half at Whistler Olympic Park, where you’ll be following in the footsteps of Olympians during the Winter 2010 Olympics. Run up green, black and blue ski slopes while testing your limits as you breathe in the alpine air. If you thought winter was pretty, wait until you see the views during summer–just stay clear of the black bears that frequent the area and you’ll be good to go. After your event, head to the nearby town to Whistler to refuel, recuperate, and maybe even re-energize with just some of the activities that Whistler offers. Here’s what to do, where to eat, how to sleep no matter your budget.

For even more awesome info, check out whistler.com

Whistler might not seem like the perfect place to chow down on Mexican food, but trust us on this one. Head to La Cantina, famous around town for its tacos and burritos. Think of this as the best way to carb-load before your event, especially if you’re tired of the night-before-race pasta parties.

If you’re looking for an epic treat meal post-race, we have two words for you: custom burger. Head to Splitz Grill where diners pick and choose their patty (which includes Free Range Bison, Spicy Lentil, and Wild Salmon), as well as their buns, veggies, and toppings (we recommend their special Splitz sauce.) Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available, which makes Splitz great for anyone, no matter their dietary styles.

If burritos or burgers don’t suit your fancy, check out Peaked Pies, a cafe serving Australian meat pies. While we recommend the butter chicken pie, the Hopper might intrigue those interested in a truly Australian experience. And, for dessert and a post-race indulgence–after all, after eight hours of intense obstacles and maybe even the coveted 50 miles, you’ve earned it–head over to Cows for ice cream and all things cow-related–including slippers, onesies, and what Cows likes to call “udder stuff.”

For those looking for fine dining, try Rimrock Cafe for its emphasis on local cuisine. Specials often include fresh catches like wild salmon or sablefish, or game meats like elk and venison.

Tough Mudders are always looking ahead to the next challenge, so it’s no surprise that Whistler just happens to be the capital for activities. What better to suit up for all of your activities then checking out Merrell’s new 2017 line for all your before, during and after event needs?

For those on a budget, there’s nothing better than a hike to work up a sweat, then a jump into a lake to cool things off. Lost Lake, located just a few miles from town, features 100 kilometers of trails during summer months.

The mountains are a must, and the Peak 2 Peak Gondola is the best way to get up close and personal with both Whistler and Blackcomb. Early to mid-summer heat brings the green slopes to life with pink and purple wildflowers, and the chance to see black bears are high.

Mudders thrive off of adrenaline, so what better way to get your heart pumping than zip lining? Head to ZipTrek Eco Tours and ask for the Mammoth Tour, advertised for “those who have an enlarged appetite for adventure and exhilaration.” Sounds like Mudders to me. Lines run anywhere from 400 to 2,400 feet long, with the biggest one descending 30-storeys. Whether you’re zip lining before or after your Toughest Mudder, you’ll be ready to conquer anything after this ride.

The adventures for Tough Mudders continue beyond this weekend. Head to Whistler Olympic Park and fFeel like an Olympian while you try your hand at biathlon: take aim and shoot a rifle at the same targets as the Olympians did. To up the ante, run a lap first, get your heart rate pounding, and then try to steady your aim! Can you hit all 5 of the small targets?

Whistler might be seen as a high-end resort, and it is, but that doesn’t mean that options don’t exist. For a more economical fare, check out the Hi-Whistler Hostel, once part of the Olympic Athlete Village during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. Rooms include the use of free Wi-fi, a common room to play games like pool, and storage for mountain bikes or other equipment that powers your Whistler vacation.

For those looking to stay a little more central to town, the Aava Whistler Hotel is a solid choice. Only a 2-minute walk from Whistler Village, the Aava offers great deals and packages, which makes this even better.

Looking for luxury? The Fairmont Chateau Whistler  has all of the added amenities you could ever need, including complimentary yoga classes, free shuttles, and valet service for both bikes and skis.

Race Recap: Tough Mudder X World Championship

Author: Tough Mudder June 14, 2018
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Well folks, it’s officially a wrap on the Tough Mudder X 2018 season. The World Championship event went down in Richmond, Virginia on June 8th, and saw some of the best athletes in the world come out to compete in what truly turned out to be the toughest mile on the planet. And if you didn’t get to see the epic event IRL, don’t worry—tune in to CBS at 1:00pm on July 14, 21, and 28 to see watch how it all unfolded.

Tough Mudder X World Championship Top Finishers

On the men’s side, perennial champion Hunter McIntyre backed up his braggadoccio leading up to the event with a dominating performance, leaving no doubt that he is the man to beat in this new sport going into next year. Hunter pulled away from the pack early on with a blistering pace on the run and managed to beat a strong competitive field that included Jacob Heppner, Dakota Rager, Patrick Vellner, and Isaiah Vidal. In the race for second place, top challenger Isaiah Vidal was nipping at Hunter’s heels all the way to the final obstacle, at which point the cumulative effect of the day’s effort may finally have taken its toll. Vidal stalled out while racing Jacob Heppner on the final rope climb just a few hundred feet from the finish, allowing for the pack of athletes just behind to pass him in the final stretch. While heartbreaking for Vidal, it was an inspiring effort and one that no one present will soon forget.

Tough Mudder X World Championship Top 3 Men

On the women’s side, newcomer Emma Chapman surprised the field with a calm and steady performance that landed her atop the podium, upsetting reigning champion Corinna Coffin and a stacked field of female competitors. Carolyne Prevost, who had posted the fastest time in the previous round and went into the final as a potential favorite to win, saw her hopes dashed halfway through the course when she fell from Kong – Infinity while in the lead, and was passed by much of the field while going back to complete the obstacle. With the fastest time through both workout zones, Chapman cruised to victory and a $25,000 payday, followed by Corinna Coffin in 2nd and Cassidy Lance-Mcwherter in 3rd. For many of the female competitors, including Cassidy Lance-Mcwherter, this was their first obstacle course race. Looking forward to the 2019 Tough Mudder X season, we expect to see some amazing competition on the female side as Coffin looks to regain her spot atop the podium.

It doesn’t get any tougher than this. We’ve made it our business to bring you the toughest events on the planet. From Tough Mudder Half to World’s Toughest Mudder, our insane obstacle engineers and crazy course designers have brought you new challenges in every form imaginable. Now, in 2018, we’re bringing the wildly successful faux Puppy Mudder event to real life. Yes, seriously.

Featuring 6 obstacles made just for dogs and the ultimate clean-up station courtesy of Waterpik Pets.

SPACE IS LIMITED: OUR 12 PM START WAVE IS ALREADY SOLD OUT, BUT THERE’S STILL ROOM IN THE 3 PM START WAVE. SIGN UP NOW TO RESERVE A SPOT FOR YOUR PUP-FOR FREE.

Prepare yourself for the newest (AND CUTEST) event ever conceived. Get your tough pups ready because on May 19, 2018, Waterpik is bringing the first ever Ruff Mudder to Tough Mudder Philly—rain or shine.

GET READY TO TACKLE:

  • Mini Everest – This slick quarter pipe is over 4’ tall. Strong hind legs are needed to build up momentum and speed to get over the top lip. Aim for the top, but there’s no promise you won’t end up at the bottom.

  • Boa Constrictor – Scratch and slide through to the other side of the dark and muddy tunnel.

  • Mud Mile x 2 – A classic Tough Mudder fan favorite, this mile of mud is doggy heaven. Climb over every mound and wade through every valley to conquer this obstacles.

  • Mini Berlin Walls x 2 – A mud slicked 2’ tall wall requiring precise eye-to-paw coordination to cleanly jump over. Lend a paw to those in need.

REHYDRATE AND RINSE:

  • 5 standard round water bowls will be provided.

  • Post-course, treat your pup to the ultimate clean-up with the Waterpik Pet Wand Pro. This tool, from the leader in replacement shower heads, was engineered from the ground up with consumers and their pets in mind, revolutionizing the way pet parents think about bath time for good. The powerful WaterComb spray penetrates even the thickest hair, rinsing away dirt and shampoo that other methods miss. The contoured wand delivers a precise line of spray that gives you more control over where the water goes and where it doesn’t, making for a much calmer bathing experience your dog will love.

STRIKE A POSE:

  • Make muddy memories last a lifetime at the step & repeat. Share on social media using the hashtags: #MyRuffPup and #RuffMudder
