At Tough Mudder, we’ve always been proud of the fact that we create the best obstacles in the world. Of the many things that make them great, we’ve had a particular focus on using our pedigree of innovation to find creative ways to help Mudder Nation face their fears.
The incredible thing about fears is that we all have them, different as they may be, and that with grit and camaraderie, we can overcome them. With millions of Mudders trampling their comfort zones it’s no wonder that we’ve had to keep inventing new ways to serve up a fresh batch of phobias through the years.
As an ode to obstacles past, we’re showcasing a few of our more unhinged creations from the past 12 years:
What happens when you take a limp net, blanket it with a blacked out tarp, and strap the whole thing tightly to the ground? You turn a limp net into a claustrophobic nightmare. We’ve had many versions of this obstacle through the years, but the iteration that graced WTM 2013 required extra faith (and a few prayers). Can you really jump far enough to clear that pit from 20’ in the air?Fears come in all flavors, sometimes literally. For the capsaicin-averse, RHBB was another level of hell. Eat a habanero and proceed with your suffering, mid-course.Remember those Fire Prevention programs from your schooldays? They existed for a reason: to help you think clearly whilst choking on smoke and fighting through flames.Sometimes Mother Nature does the work for us. Gracing multiple WTM courses in Nevada, this 30’+ cliff jump made success about far more than just physical fitness. When Mother Nature doesn’t deliver, we sometimes have to take control. This enormous freefall was notorious for making participants weak in the knees. The unknown is the root of all fears, which was why this obstacle used a freefall slide, smoke, and a blacked-out cover to completely obscure what was about to happen.
