Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tough Mudder?

Tough Mudder hosts world-class obstacle course events and races with distances ranging from 5K to 100 Miles, packed with legendary obstacles. We provide the tools to help you reach goals and events to live out unforgettable experiences. Our mission: to grow Mudder Nation into a Global Tribe that lives courage, personal accomplishment, teamwork, and fun.

How long is the Tough Mudder?

We have plenty of different course variations featuring all different course lengths and difficulties:

Tough Mudder 5K: 3.1 mile course featuring 13 obstacles
Tough Mudder Classic: An 8-10 mile course featuring 25 obstacles
Tougher Mudder: Run the same 8-10 mile Classic course, but timed
Toughest Mudder: 12 hours, through the night, how many miles can you run?
World’s Toughest Mudder: The most extreme, insane, imposing, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping 24-hour obstacle course challenge on the planet.
Mini Mudder: A ¼ mile loop run 4 times for kids ages 5-12.

How long will it take to complete a Tough Mudder?

The average finish time for a Tough Mudder 5K is 1-2 hours; for Tough Mudder Classic it’s 3.5-4 hours. That said, Tough Mudder 5K and Tough Mudder Classic aren’t timed races, so you can go at your own pace. How long an event will take you depends on your level of fitness, your experience, and whether or not you’ve been training. (Notsomuch? Download our free training guides.)

Is Tough Mudder a Race?

Tough Mudder 5k and Classic are not races. A Tough Mudder event is a personal challenge with the goal of overcoming obstacles and completing the course. This is why we do not time people and why we try to avoid using the word "race" when describing our events. This is a critical tenet of our philosophy and our pledge.

For those Mudders interested in competition, we offer a competitive Race Series, consisting of Tougher Mudder, Toughest Mudder and World’s Toughest Mudder.

Can you do Tough Mudder alone? Do I need a team?

You sure can. Participants can run as individuals and there will be plenty of people on course to help when needed. Want to run with other solo runners? Join our Solo Runner Wave to run with other individual runners.

Can I change my Start Time?

Start time assignment is completely automated and our team is not able to accommodate any requests to change start times. If you are not able to run your assigned time, or do not like your assigned start time, you have 3 options:

Option 1: Show up later than the assigned time. You will be able to join any wave later in the day. Please be sure to arrive at least 1 hour before the last start wave of the day (found in the Event Info Pack).
Option 2: Show up earlier than the assigned start time. Participants who choose this option will have to head to the standby lane and will be added to the next wave with availability.
Option 3: Upgrade your start time by purchasing First Mud to guarantee you start between 8:00am and 8:30am.

I didn't receive the same start time as the rest of my team, what do I do?

Do not fear! All participants and team members who want to run together will get to run together. Start times are completely automated, and we are not able to accomodate any start time requests. However, on event day, teams/groups that did not receive the same start time can head to the standby lane and will be added to the next wave with availability.
