Met my mileage goal in my first World’s Toughest Mudder this weekend, but only because of the help of an awesome circle of support. With awful frigid weather and being an unprepared rookie for a 24 hour race, this group kept me together when things could have fallen apart:
1. The best and most beautiful pit crew khappich made sure I was fed, suited up, and motivated to go for whatever goal I’d set.
2. Ran about half of this race shoulder to shoulder with my pal the_ocr_professor, which both the conversation and cameraderie helped make passing the time, obstacles, and miles much easier.
3. While I was super disappointed my bro crusadercody couldnt make it to WTM this time, his veteran advice and wetsuit/gear loan was absolutely critical to any kind of success I’d end up having this weekend, especially as the weather deteriorated and made things much TOUGHER.

My body aches, my flesh is mangled, but my spirits are high. I knew one thing going into this race; for better or worse, I put the most thought into it out of anybody competing that day. I obsessed about it like nothing else before. After all the preparation, I told the people closest to me that I could win, that I WAS going to win. I signed up for 2022 just a few short days after my first attempt in 2021. As soon as I decided to register, I was all in. I began making my plans to move out of NY and chase the dream full time in Durango, CO at The UltraHouse. Thank you for the opportunity anthonykunkel.

This race seemed so much tougher than last year. The obstacles appeared more difficult, the temperatures were in the low 30s for most of the time, and you never got dry. NEVER. It rained at the start and as soon as it stopped, the water obstacles opened up and kept you eternally soaked to the bone. Slowing down and getting cold would become the end of your race very quickly. I told myself, "don`t forget you have a lifetime of those CNY winters under your belt. And you trained for the cold all year. You`re ready for anything the weather throws at you." I still have a numbness in the tips of my pinky fingers, but it seems to be fading slowly.

I also had the best team. My people back in NY. The best training partners all year (tagged) and everyone else who came to visit us at The UltraHouse. They truly helped push my running to another level this year. The best pit crew around in escobar_ocr and arrranxa. Javi has some of the most experience at WTM and helped bring all of this together on game day. Aran was there every time I came through to get me back out on course as quickly as possible. No mistakes in the pit with these 2 working together.

Speaking again of Aranxa... doing this whole thing with me over the past 5 years. Agreeing to run around this country with me as I chase this pipe dream when I wasn`t even a runner when we met. Well guess what, WE DID IT! Chase your dreams people. The alternative is never knowing..

Its been roughly 730 days, 3300 miles ran between today and the last time I toed the start line of Worlds Toughest Mudder. There`s been so much covered in those 2 years that it feels like a lifetime. This race has always scared the crap out of me, those minutes when you`re in the starting coral and you`re facing this epic race of pretty monumental proportions. Knowing you`re going to be cold, hot, electrocuted, world reduced to a headlamp, beat up, mentally wore down, and for an entire day. It`s always made me feel so small in that moment. This year, I don`t quite feel that. Dont get me wrong, I`m wicked anxious for what can go wrong, but I`m focused on what will go right. I`m actually fairly confident in my abilities. For like the first time in my life, I`m confident I can do the mileage I have in my head & I`m looking forward to it. These races have a way of reminding you through every scrape, bruise and mile that you are alive. After all the crap of the last 2 years, we all need to be reminded just how that feels.
If you could send positive vibes to every single one of the competitors about to head out on course tomorrow for the next 25.5 hours, I would love it. To everyone out here about to give it your best, just hold on. When the event is over you either hurt because you gave it your all, or hurt because you quit, and the hurt from quitting will never disappear.
As someone who lives in a notoriously flat prairie state, don`t bet on me 😂, but I`ll give it my best shot. Working on living a life I won`t regret.🤘

It’s hard to believe that exactly 4 years ago I did my first tough mudder, and yesterday I completed my first world’s toughest mudder. That seemed like such an intimidating thing to me for years. I’m still trying to take it all in, but I will say WTM was a humbling experience. I trained hard and went out pretty hard for the first 20 miles. In hindsight, I could have paced a little better. Oh well. After discussing with my pit crew we decided I needed to take a break for as long as necessary. Cramps and cold were starting to sink in.
For me it was the right call. After a good nap, and a dry clothes change, i went back out and threw down with a vengeance. I went in to this just for the experience, and to push myself. I didn’t put a mileage expectation. Sure 50 would have been nice, or 75 would have been great but being in the moment and completing the obstacles was the win for me. At the end I only failed 2 obstacles and they both were an almost on my last lap. Each failure was accompanied with a laugh and a smile. It’s good to be challenged, and it’s good to be humbled. I wouldn’t change anything. At one point a volunteer asked me what kept me going, and why was I attempting kong infinity when so many were opting for the penalty? I said I have a friend who’s kid had brain cancer. He didn’t get to take a pass why should I? He smiled and gave me a giant hug. It was a nice moment. This was an amazing life experience. None of this would have been possible with out my amazing pit crew. Thanks so much to my brother Andy and my sister Julie. You two watched out for me, nourished me and kept me stable. Thank you is not enough. And a big thanks to all my fellow mudders. Even in the dark depths we all were still helping each other. This event is what I call a “gamble” every year. Anything can happen to the body and mind at any moment. The key to success is how well you can control the unknowns and push the boundaries.
It was cold this year, and the way Tough Mudder set up the rolling open obstacles this year was definitely a shock to the body by the time they all opened after I was 50 miles into the race. I pushed and tried to stay as consistent as possible. I know the game, I’ve been running this race many years now and have learned what the body and mind need to continue pushing through the pains and shivers. It got very cold, and it definitely changed the dynamics of the way my body was able to move to and try to keep up with what I mentally wanted. I went through some dark moments but in those dark moments, I knew what my purpose was out there and what I was there for and who I am as a person. “I will go the full 24 hours and if I end up with 95 or 100 miles, I’m extremely happy with my performance and leaving my soul behind on course.” Many folks weren’t able to keep up with the process and bowed out early. Training, knowing your body, the environment, and what your success looks like at the end, gets you to the finish.
I’m proud of my fellow competitors and what they each completed. Thank you TMHQ for the amazing event, as always.

This was Nov 2013! I stopped around 19.5 hrs, and ran 55 miles, doing 242 obstacles. I hadn`t run much over 10-12 miles in training leading up to it...big mistake #1 ! I wore 3 wetsuits (11mm total) for about 13 of those hours, which destroyed my hip flexors- mistake #2 . I also jumped over all the walls left foot first, until the last few hrs when I realized I couldn`t lift my left leg or push off my right foot anymore, so I had to switch- mistake #3

I had a blast though, and there`s something strangely fun about pushing yourself that hard.

I am forever grateful to chriswilczewski for housing me before & after & driving me, kbwonder for being my pit crew, and luiscmoco for carrying me on his back for 2 days after! I literally was uncapable of rolling over in bed, it was CRAZY! There are so many things we can naturally take for granted- like walking or lying down without pain! What a crazy experience 🙃

During my first 24hr race I had strategized running together with markgaudet85 in order to distract myself from the miles that lay ahead and take the pressure off. But as time went on I became more accustomed to it and wasn`t necessarily running my own race anymore. Eventually I called it quits before turning it into an actual race. Overall I think this was a good race strategy however it would have been better to have split off earlier and do my own thing.
So instead tomorrow I`ll be running my own race with a personal goal of hitting 100 (or more) miles. Not sure what the competition will look like but I`m not worried about it. Just gonna do me and run the race to the best of my ability!

QUALIFICATIONS
Athletes at World’s Toughest Mudder have the opportunity to qualify for two types of recognition in advance:
• Contender Status is earned through outstanding achievement at other qualifying events. Athletes in this category are eligible for prize money and age group awards.
• Holy Grail qualifiers have successfully completed a Tough Mudder Infinity and Toughest Mudder event within 2024. Successful completion of WTM ’24 earns them glory (which is good) and a badass, steel trophy (which is better)
