BTS: Inside the Winning 2021 Obstacle Design

Author: Tough Mudder October 11, 2021
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

We caught up with Ross, the winner of the Tough Mudder 2021 Obstacle Design Contest, to chat about his winning design and how it came to be.

5 Questions About The Winning Obstacles Design

TM: How did you first think up your design?

Ross:

I first came up with the idea while taking part in the feedback portion of the Tough Mudder Obstacle Innovation Testing in Las Vagas for Kong Infinity. We were all in groups giving feedback on the obstacles we tested that day. Trying to create more around buzz words like, ‘Big Splash’ and ‘Teamwork’. This lead to few ideas but nothing major until I saw the challenge this year.

TM: What really inspired this design?

Ross:

With the global pandemic, it was a while since I ran or got my book of designs out and had a little sketch. When the competition came round again, I thought I would get back into my old habits and give it another go. I gave myself one constraint this time around which was it had to be a teamwork design. Teamwork designs are definitely the hardest to design but I was up to the challenge. The dream is to get something as popular as Block Ness Monster!

TM: What do you think will be the most challenging part of this design for the Obstacle Innovation Team?

Ross:

Getting the balance between the number of people required to lift the bridge without making it too easy or hard.

TM: One question our team wanted to know, how do you see the last person getting across?

Ross:

It’s a good question, to be honest! I originally pictured your teammates running back around like they do to help at the walls, but never contemplated how far that return walk would be. Since the announcement of Counterweight, I’ve read most of the comments and contemplated a few changes based on people’s reactions.

TM: What are any further tweaks or design advice you have had since the original design?

Ross:

One change that could be tested based on the announcement feedback would be an additional rope on the other side. The downside of this would be the additional help might make it too easy and you wouldn’t see too many wet runners.

The other way that could be tested for the ‘Last Runner’ is if the rope was long enough to be thrown across the bridge to the already crossed runners so they could grab it, pull and allow the last runners to cross.

I would also consider adding knots on the rope to avoid rope burn from slipping.

Stay tuned for further updates on the winning design and more Obstacle Innovation developments as we head into 2022.

The Winner of the Obstacle Course Design Challenge is…

Author: Tough Mudder September 24, 2021
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter
obstacle design

The votes are in, and we have our Tough Mudder 2021 Obstacle Design Challenge winner. It’s “Counterweight” designed by Ross Munro from the UK.

You may even recognize the winners name, that’s because Ross was one half of the winning team from 5 years ago that brought you Kong Infinity. Clearly, there are lots of crazy obstacle-related things flying around in Ross’ mind.

Counterweight is a team-based, drawbridge-type obstacle that requires Mudders to pull on a rope to raise the central portion of the bridge out of the water. Once raised, the Mudder ahead of them can cross to the other side. Let is slip and the Mudder on the bridge is in for a swim.

Judges Comments On The Obstacle Design

The design scored highly on its originality with one judge observing “Super creative, mechanical and teamwork-based. This incorporates a lot of aspects that aren’t as represented in our current obstacle menu.”

obstacle design

The judges also liked how the obstacle incorporates the key Tough Mudder obstacle criteria with an emphasis on strength and teamwork.  “I really like the teamwork nature that this obstacle requires,” said another judge. Referring to the unique teamwork element required to conquer Counterweight.

It is rare to have a challenge where Mudders both on and off the obstacle need to interact and work together to complete it.

Next up on the Obstacle Innovation journey is for our mad scientists to get this obstacle tested at our Central Florida event. How will it go? One judge told us that “This will take real design work to get this to function and possibly some thought on the mechanism to control the bridge. A lot to chew on this one but worth the effort.” Exactly.

Congrats again to Ross, truly an obstacle design maestro.

Stay tuned for more Obstacle Innovation updates as we get closer to testing at the end of the year.

Obstacle Design Challenge 2021: Craziest Entries So Far

Author: Tough Mudder
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

The mad minds from all over Mudder Nation have been sending in their designs, which have clearly been fueled by many months of being cooped up inside. And we love it. Check out some of the wackiest submissions so far for some inspiration and get your entries in before September 10.

Net Flips & Chill

Combining a relaxing vibe with the scary thought of being trapped underwater like a lobster, this obstacle would require a fair bit of mental fortitude. We’re just not sure if we are quite ready for the next episode.

Wrecking Ball

There is a lot to unpack here. People are swinging, things are being thrown and you end up smashing into a brick wall. We love the general chaos on display here.

Electric Avenue

This is shocking: an electrified zip wire? Sliding through electric tentacles?  Talk about taking Electroshock Therapy to the next level. Literally.

Shake N’ Bake

Now this one is really tough. Balance on a single line, while it is being moved around and try to make your way to the other side. Oh, and if you fall (which you will)  you land in a water pit filled with electricity. Wow. Bonus points for using a “Reciprocating Linear Actuator” in your design (If only we knew what that was).

How REIGN Keeps You Energized For Your Training

Author: Tough Mudder
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

You know what gets us out of bed each morning? The fact that we can bring the World’s best obstacles to the thousands of Mudders around the globe. It’s no small feat, and Tough Mudder has a small (but mighty) team to operationally make sure all of this is possible for those who are looking for some good clean Muddy fun.

We prepare for an event like we would imagine our community of Mudders would prepare for the course: training to stay sharp, communicating with our team and focusing on nutrition to make us feel great at each Tough Mudder weekend.

Sometimes the above isn’t enough, and we need that little extra ‘boost’ of energy. Well, we (and you) lucked out when we built a partnership with REIGN Energy for the 2023 season. Why? Because they are bringing the boom sauce, the ‘let’s get this sh*t started juice,’ the ‘I don’t care what happened last night, drink this and get ready to run through a brick wall’ liquid. That’s right, REIGN Energy is coming on in a BIG way, offering complimentary cans of REIGN to all participants at each Tough Mudder event.

Let’s dig a little bit deeper with REIGN, as we sit down with them and see why it’s the perfect match for your next Tough Mudder event or for a time you need a (big) kick in the pants:

How should Reign be used during working out and training?

REIGN Total Body Fuel provides multiple benefits to help you power through a tough workout. 300 mg of natural (plant based) caffeine provides a pre-workout boost as well as a sustained release of energy throughout your workout.

When is the best time to consume REIGN before an experience or event like Tough Mudder?

Whether you need a jump start to your day, a pre-workout boost or that extra kick to get you through long hours – REIGN Total Body Fuel is formulated for the active lifestyle. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes. REIGN Body Fuel contains vitamins B3, B6 and B12 which contribute to a normal energy-yielding metabolism.

How does REIGN help with post workout recovery?

REIGN Body Fuel has ZERO sugar and BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine) may help muscles recover post workout. Studies show that BCAAs can promote protein and neurological synthesis, which can lead to more energy for longer workouts and better gains.

For people who might not be familiar with the REIGN product, what is key information for them to know when comparing your product to others?

REIGN Total Body Fuel only uses natural caffeine, extracted from green coffee beans & tea leaves. Caffeine has been known to increase stamina and alertness, as well as improve concentration and focus. Every can of REIGN Total Body Fuel is packed with 300mg of Natural Caffeine to help fuel your day.

What is the best product as an introduction to REIGN?

REIGN Body Fuel has 18 amazing flavors in our core product line with Orange Dreamsicle leading the pack as a “fan favorite”, but if you want to add fuel to the fire try the REIGN Inferno product line. REIGN Inferno is thermogenic fuel that burns calories & accelerates metabolism, Watermelon Warlord is the ideal to quench those intense workouts.

Tough Mudder Mudderhorn

…we are pumped to have REIGN Energy on site this season, and can’t wait to welcome you with a cold can to get you across the finish line.
