meet your new coach

Tough Mudder Training is here to support your journey to conquering the Classic + 5K Tough Mudder course. You’ve signed up for your event, now it’s time to get ready. With this program you’ll receive an in-depth training guide as well as weekly and daily fitness tips on how to crush each obstacle. You’ll also get expert guidance from Shayne Haley, a long-time Tough Mudder enthusiast, podium finisher, and personal trainer.

Meet your new tough mudder training coach…

Following her collegiate volleyball career, Shayne needed an outlet for her competitive energy, and Tough Mudder was the answer. Since running her first Tough Mudder at the Houston event in 2017, she has participated in every Tough Mudder format and continues to strive towards becoming one of the top females in the OCR community. Shayne has always known she wanted to be part of the fitness industry with the goal of making a difference in people’s lives. Having grown up around a lot of unhealthy habits, Shayne made it her mission to help others combat those habits that she saw first hand. Now joining the Tough Mudder Training team, Shayne is coming in with unmatched energy to help participants be prepared and successfully complete the events.

Let’s grill her with some questions, shall we?

Q: What got you into Tough Mudder?

Shayne: I got into Tough Mudder because my client at the time had been doing them for years. He would talk about Tough Mudder constantly, and I thought he was crazy. He finally convinced me to try one and I was instantly hooked!

Q: What do you remember about your first Tough Mudder?

I remember two things specifically: the first one being the amount of encouragement I had at every obstacle. I loved that literally everyone at the top of Everest cheers for you to get to the top, it definitely helped me face my fears. The second thing I remember is being in the muddiest puddle I have ever been in… I enjoyed every second of it.

Q: What’s your favorite Tough Mudder obstacle and why?

Funky Monkey is hands down my favorite obstacle. I love being able to swing around on the spinning wheels at the end!

Q: What’s a fear that you’ve overcome?

It may sound silly, but I have a fear of failing. Tough Mudder has taught me that it is okay to not be the best at something. It is okay to reach out to someone, or to lean on someone when I need help. It has been a great change for my mindset.

Q: What does teamwork on-course mean to you?

Teamwork on the course is what Tough Mudder is all about – it’s in every aspect of the race. It can be as big as lending a hand to someone to help them over a wall, or something as small as telling someone they’re doing great as you run by them. Your small encouraging comment could literally get someone through the race.

Q: How did you stay fit during the pandemic?

During the pandemic, I stayed fit by going for runs and using weights in my garage. I am in Houston, so the summer was brutal, but it was worth it. I actually loved the opportunity to be outside more often.

Q: What’s the best (or worst) excuse you hear from others on why they can’t do a Tough Mudder?

The most popular two are that they don’t think they’re in shape for the event, or that they don’t want to get muddy (insert eye roll here).

Q: What would you tell someone who’s on the fence about signing up?

“When was the last time you did something for the first time?” I know it is a staple Tough Mudder quote, but I have pushed many people over the fence with that.

Q: Do you have any funny or memorable Tough Mudder stories you’d like to share?

I have so many! I think my favorite memory is from a Toughest Mudder. I was running with a group a friends and we had to have been 8 hours into the race at this point, so we were getting into a pretty delirious stage. We started crawling through Devil’s Beard, and for no reason at all, we all started laughing so hard we couldn’t move! We had to have been there for 5 minutes trying to compose ourselves. To this day, we still have no idea why we started laughing.

Let our certified Tough Mudder coaches support you virtually, give you the accountability and teach you the skills you need to crush your event. Sign up today.
