World's Toughest Mudder 2014 is officially in the books. Universally regarded as the toughest World's Toughest Mudder, it was also the most complex, challenging, fun, and full of community spirit of any WTM to date. Held on a beautiful but mercilessly hilly course overlooking Lake Las Vegas, and just beside the splendor of the Westin and Hilton Hotels, one of the most unique global events went down in true Mudder fashion. Hot during the day, cold and windy at night, and full of new and different obstacles, participants were challenged like never before.
Hardy competitors continue to press on despite the cold wind, trying to hit mileage goals and go home with a coveted 25, 50, or 75 mile WTM bib. Overall #1 Ryan Atkins crossed the finish line approximately 15 mins ago, having completed 95 miles with an insurmountable 9 mile lead on second place Jarrod Pace (86 miles) of Sydney, Australia. Ryan will stop and repeat as the World's Toughest Mudder. The battle in the overall is now between Jarrod and Trevor Cichosz of Woodland, Washington, USA (85 miles) for second.
The event has officially begun! After a rousing speech by startline emcee @seancorvelle the Mudders took off in a blaze of glory. According to 2x (2011, 2012) World's Toughest Mudder champion Junyong Pak, however, the first and foremost danger of this hot Las Vegas climate is for participants to go out way too strong. Instead, he counseld: "Run the first half of the race with your head, and the second half with your heart." To meet some of these crazy participants, see here: http://bit.ly/1xrzty0.
Sean Corvelle waits at the start line while nervous jitters dominate the Pit Area. Pit Crew members methodically to frantically prepare their runners with sunscreen, vaseline, and hopefully, boosts of confidence as we approach the T-minus 30 minutes mark to #WTM2014. Pak studies his excel-spreadsheet race plan, Ryan Atkins lurks inside his tent, Amelia Boone hangs out in the pit, last year's team winners 3AM Waterfalls chat it up in their tent, and Deanna Blegg and her colleagues of Under Armour's Team Australia get their team prepared. It's about to go down.
What is WTM?
World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM) is a 24-hour around-the-clock version of Tough Mudder. Whereas regular Tough Mudder is “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet,” WTM (or “World’s Toughest” as it’s colloquially called) lays legitimate claim to actually being THE toughest event on the planet. WTM this year will be held November 15-16 at Lake Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. (Yes, we said “Vegas.”)
Competitors are currently undertaking the final hours of preparation in the chilly morning hours out at Lake Las Vegas, Nevada for the 2014 World's Toughest Mudder. Stay tuned to this page (toughmudder.com/wtm-live) for live updates, plus add us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube channels so you don't miss one muddy step of this 24 hours of insane obstacles starting in just about 2.5 hours at 10am PST. Wish them all luck by using the hashtag #WTM2014.
